This recipe of Beef and Chickpea Burger is a healthy alternative to the popular, mouth-watering burger. The one thing I miss about not eating at fast-food restaurants is burgers. There’s something so satisfying and comforting about a big beef burger in a soft bread roll covered in melted plastic cheese and sauces. Somehow, temporarily, it feels like all your problems have drifted away.
Not for long, though, once you’ve scoffed that Big Mac or Whopper, your body starts working overtime, and your health pays for it in the long run. To kill these juicy burger cravings, you can make your burgers at home.
Delicious Beef and Chickpea Burgers
If you’ve never made patties before, it’s much easier than you think. As long as the mince is in there, you’ll be fine. The best bit is you can add in all the extra topping you like and leave out the ones you don’t. I strongly recommend pairing some jalapenos with a slice of tasty cheese and avocado. Your beef and chickpea burgers will be perfect!
We use organic beef mince, which of course, is slightly steeper in price than your standard supermarket mince for half the amount. To bulk up the patty mix, I add chickpeas but feel free to try it out with lentils or quinoa.
If I’m super organised, I make my own wholemeal bread rolls, but recently time has not been on my side, so we’ve been using fresh wholemeal based bread rolls from the local bakery.
Juicy Beef and Chickpea Burgers
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (minced beef) - organic, grass-fed preferably
- ¾ pound chickpeas (garbanzo beans) - canned, rinsed and drained
- ½ medium red onion - diced
- 2 cloves garlic - crushed
- 2-3 tablespoons jalapeños - optional
- 1 medium egg - beaten
- 1 pinch salt - to taste
- 1 pinch ground black pepper - to taste
Burger Toppings
- ½ cup jalapenos - sliced
- 8 large slices tomato
- 1 medium avocado - sliced
Instructions
- Place the chickpeas into your food processor and process well. You can mash with a fork or a potato masher instead if you don’t have a processor.
- Add the processed chickpeas and the remaining burger patty ingredients in a large bowl and mix them well. Feel free to add in any extra dried herbs and spices at this stage too.
- Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Once hot, shape the mince mix into flat round patties (make them thinner and larger than you expect a burger to be as they shrink and fatten up when cooking) and place straight into the frying pan.
- Once browned on one side, flip the patties and continue frying until cooked through.
- Assemble your burger with your favourite toppings and enjoy!
