The cottage pie recipe is one of the traditional recipes in France; It is also known as the Hachis Parmentier. It suits everyone as it’s just a mix of ground beef, mashed potatoes, and grated cheese. Cottage pie is an easy recipe. Moreover, it’s pretty quick to cook and fills you up!
Hachis Parmentier is an excellent way to avoid food from being wasted! You can use up any leftover meat. Don’t forget we used to make it with beef, but you can also make it with any meat such as chicken, veal, or sausages, and why not try to use some leftover fish? Savoury French Cottage Pie (Hachis Parmentier) Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 kilogram potatoes
- 500 grams ground beef (minced beef)
- 1 bunch parsley
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 1 clove garlic
- 150 grams Swiss cheese
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg - grated
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream (also called thickened cream)
- 250 ml milk
Instructions
- Peel onion and garlic clove.
- Peel potatoes and cut them into pieces. Put them in a watery pan and bring to a boil. Cook for 20 minutes (until tender).
- Grind or mince your piece of meat.
- Chop onion and garlic clove thinly.
- Fry onion and garlic with 2 tablespoons olive oil over low heat until tender.
- Wash the parsley and chop parsley leaves thinly. Mix them with meat, onion, and garlic, and add salt and pepper to taste.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
- Drain potatoes and mash them. Add 250 ml milk and 2 tablespoons of double cream.
- Mix and add 2 teaspoons grated nutmeg and salt to taste. Mix again until all ingredients are combined.
- Spread a baking dish with butter and layer the first half of your mashed potatoes.
- Then place the minced meat layer and cover with the remaining mashed potatoes.
- Top with a Swiss cheese layer.
- Place in the oven, turn on the grill if you have one, and bake for about 15 minutes until it’s light golden brown and the cheese is melted.
