Börek is essentially a type of savoury pie that has its origins in Turkey but is widespread throughout several countries. It can be used as both an appetizer and an entree.
Tasty Ground Beef Börek Pastries
These tasty ground beef börek pastries are my favourite. These are my comfort food and I honestly enjoy making them at home.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (minced beef)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice (also called pimento or Jamaican Pepper)
- 1 yellow onion - chopped
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- ¾ cup butter
Instructions
- Ensure the dough is at room temperature. Keep covered with plastic cling film and a towel to prevent drying out.
- Melt the butter, then allow it to cool. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Heat oil in your skillet and cook the onions before adding the ground beef, paprika, allspice along with salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Cook beef through, but don’t allow it to become dry. Set beef aside and allow to cool.
- Lay the first sheet of pastry down and brush with some melted butter (butter should not be too warm). Take one-third of the ground beef mixture and spread it evenly along the long side of the pastry sheet, around two inches in from the edge. Roll the pastry around the meat mixture to form a tube shape. Cut the tube in half and curl each half into a coil shape.
- Repeat more times with another 2 sheets of pastry and the remaining beef mixture.
- Place the ‘coils’ onto a greased or non-stick baking tray in such a way that prevents them from uncoiling as they cook. Give another brush with the butter. Cook in the oven for about 20 minutes until they’re a nice golden colour.
