I love cooking and enjoy trying out dishes from other countries and blending them in with Indian style dishes, which I find a creative thing to do. Take the Indian Burritos, for instance.
I have lived in the US for 12 years, and during my stay, I have indulged myself in spicy and some delicious Mexican dishes that satisfied my taste buds. Since I come from the Indian subcontinent (countries that include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives), some of the dishes have a similar version where I come from.
Indian Burritos
Before I begin, I want to let you guys know that I’ll be using many Indian names when describing some of the food items and will explain what they are after, so bear with me if you don’t get it. I totally understand! Take, for instance, roti or chapati, which is a ready-made Indian flatbread. So anyway, I have been thinking of doing an Indian version of the Burrito and below is the recipe.
How to Make Indian Burritos
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (minced beef)
- 3 cloves garlic - crushed, or use garlic paste – 1/2 tablespoon
- 2 medium white onion - chopped, you can use only one if you are not a fan of onions
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (chilli powder in British English) - or use 2 chopped green chillies
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon salt - to taste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons parsley - chopped, adds flavour to your dish
- 2 tablespoons sunflower oil - you can use vegetable oil if you prefer
- 2 medium tomatoes - chopped
Instructions
- Use a medium-sized cooking pot, bring it to medium heat, and pour about two tablespoons of sunflower oil.
- After about 10 seconds, add chopped onions and crushed garlic or garlic paste and stir it for 2 to 3 minutes on medium heat.
- Add the recommended Chilli powder or chopped green chillies, cumin powder, salt, Turmeric powder stir again for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and stir for another 2 minutes.
- Add the cut-up minced beef into the pot and mix all of the ingredients using your spatula so that all of the spices, onions and garlic get onto the meat. Cover the pot with a lid and let it heat for 20 minutes, stirring in between every 4 to 5-minute intervals to make sure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot. Add a little bit of water.
- After 20 minutes, turn off the heat. Open the lid and let the steam out for a couple of minutes.
- Take three rotis or chapatis (Indian flatbread), heat them on a frying pan, and then lay them out onto a plate. Cut up a lemon and place it on the side of the plate.
- The minced beef dish, called Keema, is similar to the chili (in the US, chili is a dish cooked using ground beef with tomato sauce and some spices like oregano, chilli powder, salt and cayenne). The Indian style chili, however, is drier without the tomato sauce.
- Using your spatula, spread the cooked minced beef in the middle of the flatbread (chapati) and squirt some lemon juice from the chopped lemon slice. Add some finely chopped parsley to add flavour and wrap the flatbread around like how burritos are wrapped. Viola!! There’s your Indian styled Burrito!! You can add your preferred sauces as you like and also add lettuce or chopped tomatoes or sliced onions, as you want to suit your taste.
