Brazilian-Style Beef Stroganoff is a beloved comfort food in Brazil, and while it shares a name and some culinary roots with its Russian cousin, the Brazilian version has evolved into something entirely unique and deeply cherished. This hearty dish is a staple in many Brazilian households, especially for weeknight dinners and family gatherings. What truly sets the Brazilian adaptation apart is its unmistakable creamy texture, subtle spices, and the traditional pairing with fluffy white rice — often enriched with a touch of dairy for added smoothness.
The origins of stroganoff lie in 19th-century Russia, where it was made with sautéed pieces of beef in a mustard and sour cream sauce. However, the dish gained international popularity in the mid-20th century and was subsequently adapted by many cultures, including Brazil. Brazilian cuisine is a rich mosaic of influences — Portuguese, African, Indigenous, and European — and it is no surprise that this dish has taken on new life once it crossed into Brazilian kitchens. By the 1950s and 60s, the recipe had already become a common feature in cookbooks and restaurants across major Brazilian cities and quickly found its place in home kitchens as a feel-good favorite.
In the Brazilian version, the sauce is not only enriched with cream but also often includes ketchup or tomato paste for a subtle sweetness, and dairy alternatives like rice milk are sometimes used for lighter variations. In this healthier twist, ground beef replaces sliced steak, offering both budget-friendliness and a quicker cooking time. The addition of paprika and optional cumin lends gentle warmth and complexity, ensuring the dish retains hearty flavor even when made with leaner ingredients.
Another key component of the meal is, of course, the creamy rice. In Brazil, rice is so central to daily meals that many traditional recipes include methods of enhancing its flavor and texture. In this variation, a splash of cream and a pinch of salt are stirred in at the end, transforming plain rice into a velvety-soft and beautifully balanced base that complements the rich stroganoff perfectly.
What makes this dish so special for many Brazilians is the nostalgia it brings. It’s the kind of comfort food that spans generations, present at family Sunday lunches, birthday gatherings, and even school cafeterias. Some families enjoy their stroganoff with a side of shoestring potatoes (“batata palha”) for a delightful crunch. Others might swap in chicken or even hearts of palm for vegetarian versions that remain just as flavorful and fitting for the dish’s creamy nature.
Whether you’re recreating this dish to revisit memories of Brazilian hospitality or trying it for the first time, Brazilian-Style Beef Stroganoff with Creamy Rice is more than just a meal — it’s a flavorful journey to the heart of Brazilian culture. It’s proof that comfort food transcends borders and that even a globally known dish like stroganoff can tell a very local, personal story when infused with the flavor profiles and traditions of a vibrant culinary heritage.

Awesome Brazilian-Style Beef Stroganoff With Creamy Rice
Ingredients
500 grams ground beef (minced beef)
1 dash paprika
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 dash cumin - optional
½ small onion - Spanish, cut into small pieces
4 cloves garlic
4 cups white rice - organic
⅛ cup cream- 2 cups rice milk
2 teaspoons cornstarch
Instructions
- If possible, one hour ahead of time, cut the meat and mix paprika and cumin with olive oil, salt and pepper and let it rest. Saute garlic and onions in a hot pan, add the beef and cook it until medium-rare. When meat is properly cooked, add rice milk, extra paprika and bring to a boil.
- Mix cornstarch with rice milk in a separate container and stir well to avoid clumps. When the mixture in the pan is boiling, add cornstarch mix and stir constantly. You will need to let it come to a boil again to make sure the corn starch is appropriately cooked. The mixture will start to thicken.
- Adjust your seasoning and add the cream before serving. I like to add some cream to the rice as well, along with some salt. Pour the stroganoff over the rice before serving, and enjoy!
